“Sansu/Landscape” is a special exhibition bringing together mountain-and-water and landscape paintings and everyday objects from the collections of the Coreana Museum of Art and the Coreana Cosmetics Museum. From the lineage of Southern School painting in the late Joseon period to modern and contemporary painting, it explores the varied approaches and changing expressions through which artists have observed nature and rendered it on canvas.
In East Asian painting, ‘sansu’ (mountains and water) was a form that conveyed the painter’s spirit and ideals, rather than merely reproducing nature’s outward appearance. ‘Landscape,’ by contrast, is associated with a modern way of seeing in which an observer standing at a particular location selects and composes the world before them as a scene. In Korean modern and contemporary painting, these concepts have continually intersected rather than replacing one another. Observation and sketching of actual scenery, Western perspective and color, and artists’ memories and sensory impressions were added to traditional brushwork, ink, and views of nature, diversifying the ways nature was expressed. The ‘/’ in the exhibition title connects these distinct concepts while leaving the space between them open.
Works by the 26 participating artists reveal the multilayered perspectives through which Korean modern and contemporary painting has viewed and expressed nature: from imagined utopias and symbols embodied in natural objects to observation and sketching of actual scenery, and landscapes reconstructed through evocative brushwork, ink, and color.
